Columbus Young Professionals Blog Event

13 04 2007

On Tuesday, April 17th, the Columbus Chamber of Commerce is holding two “Young Professional Café” Events, where attendees will be able to converse with Rebecca Ryan of Next Generation Consulting, who is doing a study on the “Brain Drain” issue in Columbus.

For anyone not able to attend these events in person, a “Blogspot” event is being held simultaneously, so that contributions can be made remotely via the Internet. This web-based forum will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

The purpose of these events is to prepare the final information to be delivered on Wednesday, April 18th at the State of the Young Professionals address at Mershon Auditorium.

This is a great opportunity to voice your opinions if you happen to be a young (under 40) professional, and the ability to use web-based technologies for this gathering of ideas is a great way to reach out to this younger, tech-savvy demographic on a local level.

How Blogging Can Help You Get a New Job

13 04 2007

There was a very interesting article a few days ago in the Wall Street Journal about how blogging can help in the search for a new job.

Does anyone have any success stories on a local level with their blogging landing them potential job offers?

How Blogging Can Help You Get a New Job

Corporate recruiters have long surfed the Web to vet potential hires, but now they are also surfing blogs to unearth job candidates, expanding their talent pool and gaining insights they say they can’t get fromrésumés and interviews.

In addition to blogs that focus on their industry or field of interest, recruiters say they check candidates’ blogs about noncareer-related topics for evidence of writing skills and clues to how well rounded they are.

Mr. Sterling believes that one reason his Web journal, Screenwork, regularly generates job offers is that he has never written about wanting them. “If you [blog] to get a job, you’ll be less successful,” he says. “It’s just like dating. If you appear too hungry, nobody wants to date you.”

But Ms. Dixson disagrees. “If you’re currently job hunting, say so in your blog’s ‘About Me’ blurb,” she advises. “Say you’re interested in learning about opportunities in your field.”

Indiscrete bloggers can derail job opportunities. A candidate for an entry-level sales job at Zoom was knocked out of the running in December after Mr. Glass read his blog. “My jaw dropped,” he says. “The person started to make disparaging remarks about the people he interviewed with.”

Indie Labels Using Blogs to Boost Music Sales

3 04 2007

It’s already a pretty common occurrence to see every local music and indie record labels with a myspace profile, but how many of them are using blogging within myspace, or have any sort of news blogging on their websites? Could bands, musicians, or record labels use blogging technology on a local level to better promote themselves?

Below is an excerpt from a recent article on BloggersBlog.com:

In addition to leaking albums to bloggers music companies can also get bloggers to spread the word about new music by offering embedding music videos. A lot of independent artists are using YouTube and/or MySpace Videos in this manner. They also kept the embed feature activated so bloggers could embed the videos.

If it works for the indie bands then the larger music publishers can be expected to eventually give it a go as well. If all the music labels offer embeddable music videos than bloggers could really become the new VJs.
